Message from the Principal

A man with a beard smiles broadly, wearing a bow tie.

Dear Cross Community,

We are excited for the start of the upcoming school year and look forward to seeing our well-rounded students showcase their energy, talent, and character.  Our Cross Community is made up of students, parents, teachers, and staff, with everyone working together to make Cross a tremendous school.  Cross continues to attract high quality students and involved families, and I'm proud to say it is the middle school of choice in northwest Tucson.  Last year, we earned the A+ School of Excellence® from the Arizona Educational Foundation®, and we hope to continue to push ourselves.  This next year will bring exciting new challenges and opportunities to grow together.  I look forward to seeing you at our orientations, celebrations of your children, fine arts events, and athletic events.

This year begins my 26th year in the Amphitheater School District.  I was a special education teacher at both Harelson Elementary School and Cross Middle School before I spent time as Assistant Principal at La Cima Middle School, Wilson K-8, and Prince Elementary School.  My first principalship was at Holaway Elementary School where I spent 6 years before returning to Cross.  The 2025-2026 school year will be my 6th year as Principal at Cross Middle School.  During my time as principal I have served on the Board of Directors for Tucson Values Teachers and Literacy Connects.  Being an administrator at Cross has always been my dream position and I am blessed to be surrounded by a school community that is supportive of public education, teachers, and children.

Prior to joining the Amphitheater School District, I attended Sabino High School and the University of Oklahoma.  I obtained my Master of Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.  Outside of school I enjoy golfing, hiking, hanging out with my dog, and traveling with my wife.

Looking forward to an outstanding year!

In partnership,

Chris Gutierrez
